The Tour of Val d’Azun, following a loop from Argelès-Gazost, is a really beautiful, mid-mountain, summertime hike in which you will cross many small, isolated valleys, forests and free-roaming cattle herds. Each day, the route passes along pleasant, well-marked footpaths, without technical difficulties, offering splendid views across the surrounding mountains and landscapes (most notably, the Pic du Midi!).

You will enjoy the charming villages of Arras en Lavedan and Arrens-Marsous, as well as your arrival in the Vallée d’Arbéost, having followed the very pretty Col de Saucède. For 5 days you are going to discover an exceptional area which will surely amaze you!

  • Day 1

    Argelès Gazost

      Arrive at Argelès-Gazost, discover the town and settle into your accommodation.

    • Day 2

      From Argelès Gazost to Arrens-Marsous

      • Distance : 15 km
      • Duration : 4h30
      • Elevation gain : 700 m
      • Negative gradient : 290 m

      Argelès-Gazost, ‘sub-prefecture’ of the Hautes-Pyrénées is ideally located to welcome you as the starting point of your Tour du Val d’Azun. Leaving behind all urbanisation, you will climb up through the beautiful forest. After passing by the village of Arras en Lavedan, you continue to climb before arriving at a mountain pass. Your descent via this pass will provide you with a splendid view across the surrounding mountains. The rest of this stage moves between forests, charming villages (Arcizans-Dessus, Aucun, etc.) and unobstructed views. A final stretch through the middle of some flat fields brings you to your stop for the night, the village of Arrens-Marsous.

    • Day 3

      From Arrens-Marsous in a loop via the GR10 and Turon des Aulhes

      For this second stage, a loop is on the agenda ! From the village, the route crosses a small bridge over the Gave d’Azun, then joins a forest track and climbs back up via the Col des Bordères before arriving in the Vallèe d’Estaing. Having passed through the village and climbed gently through the valley for a few kilometres, the route climbs steeply towards Habourade and Peyrelade, offering you a fantastic panorama over the surrounding area. The descent is very beautiful and, as you lift your gaze, you enjoy the view over the Vallée d’Arrens and the surrounding peaks.

    • Day 4

      From Arrens-Marsous to Arbéost

      • Distance : 15 km
      • Duration : 4h30
      • Elevation gain : 760 m
      • Negative gradient : 865 m

      Today brings a change of valley! Having left Arrens-Marsousn you pass by the Chapel of Pouey Laün before climbing up through the forest. Little by little, the route rises up to the mountain pastures to reach the Col de Saucède, the highlight of your day and a point from which to enjoy splendid views of the surroundings.

      From the Route du Soulor, you descend through summer meadows. You arrive on the high slopes, passing close to farms typical of the region before reaching the village.

    • Day 5

      From Arbéost to Haugarou

      • Distance : 12 km
      • Duration : 5
      • Elevation gain : 850 m
      • Negative gradient : 400 m

      Montée sérieuse dès le départ, dans les bois, pour déboucher dans les prairies d’altitudes pour découvrir les hautes montagnes environnantes ainsi que sa faune et flore. Passage en crète avec vue à 360 degrés jusqu’à arriver au lac et col de Soum. Puis l’itinéraire est à flanc sur la crète de la Serre pour retrouver la vue sur la vallée d’Arrens et Argelès, avant une descente à travers une forêt de sapins pour arriver au refuge en dortoir. (Possibilité de chambre double selon disponibilité, nous consulter)

    • Day 6

      From Haugarou to Argeles Gazost

      • Distance : 20 km
      • Duration : 6h45
      • Elevation gain : 600 m
      • Negative gradient : 1370 m

      Passing by a small forest path, the view opens up as you arrive at the Col de Bazès. You then follow a succession of mountain passes ( Serre, Couraduque and Couret) allowing you to enjoy a plunging view over the Vallée d’Argelès-Gazost, which you will reach by a lovely descent, passing by the Col de Liar.

    • Accommodation

      1 night in a hotel, 2 nights in a bed and breakfast and 1-night half-board in a ‘gite’.

      Gites are selected specifically for their warm welcome and friendly atmosphere. More often than not, you will share a dormitory of 4-8 beds. Sheets and towels are not provided (ensure you include them in your luggage).

      Half-board: dinner, overnight stay and breakfast included.

    • Difficulty level

      4 to 5 hours of hiking per day.

      Technical Difficulties: 850m maximum of positive altitude.

      You are in good physical condition and you are prepared to hike for several days. You know how to orientate yourself using a map and TopoGuide. No technical difficulties on this circuit.
