From Hendaye Beach to the bustling village of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the Basse-Navarre region, this first leg of the GR10 offers an itinerary that crosses borders. 

Starting at the ocean, passing through the Basque Country to reach the start of the Pyrénées: villages of half-timbered houses; woods and meadows where you will encounter famous Pottok horses; low mountains including the emblematic Rhune which rises little by little to the ridges of the Iparla and, finally, the fortified town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

  • Day 1

    From Hendaye to Ascain

    • Distance : 18 km
    • Duration : 6h30
    • Elevation gain : 742 m
    • Negative gradient : 664 m

    You start your journey from the famous beach of Hendaye, official starting point of the GR10. You pass through the village of Biriatou, overlooking the Bidassoa, a natural border with Spain, to arrive at your hotel in Ascain.

  • Day 2

    From Ascain to Ainhoa

    • Distance : 18.5 km
    • Duration : 6h30
    • Elevation gain : 672 m
    • Negative gradient : 686 m

    Climb up to the 3 Fontaines, with the Rhune mountain in sight. Next, you cross the tracks of the rack railway. Pass through the typical village of Care with its famous Basque Pottok horses. You then arrive in Ainhoa which is officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France.

  • Day 3

    From Ainhoa to Bidarray

    • Distance : 23 km
    • Duration : 7h
    • Elevation gain : 1000 m
    • Negative gradient : 1000 m

    In the morning, climb up to the 3 Croix mountain pass and, at the summit of Atxulégi, you can take in the panorama. Afterwards, descend to the Veaux mountain pass. You have the option to climb up to Gorospil before descending into Bidarray via the Harpékosaindoa cave.

  • Day 4

    From Bidarray to St-Etienne de Baïgorry

    • Distance : 19 km
    • Duration : 6h15
    • Elevation gain : 800 m
    • Negative gradient : 750 m

    One of the most beautiful stages of your journey, with the Iparla peaks.
    4 options for this stage: 

    • Level 1 : 19km -6h15- Altitude Difference : +800m -750m 
      Level 2.A : 20km – 7h – Altitude Difference : +1030m -950m No overhead passage via Bourouzune and Urdoz.
    • Level 2.B : 19km -7h- Altitude Difference : +1020m -940m : some rocky parts.
    • Level 3 : 18km -8h- Altitude Difference : +1180m -1160m : more challenging rocky parts.

  • Day 5

    From St-Etienne de Baïgorry to Saint-Jean-Pied de Port

    • Distance : 18 km
    • Duration : 6h15
    • Elevation gain : 860 m
    • Negative gradient : 860 m

    Spare no effort on these final mountain passes before your descent into Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, at the gates of the Navarre.

    For the more motivated, you also have the option to climb to the top of the Oylarandoy : +4km +2h +200m -200m.

  • Day 6

    Saint-Jean-Pied de Port

      Breakfast, then the train (included in the trip) and dispersal of the group. 

      If doing the second leg of the itinerary, you have the option to visit St Jean, rest or do some other hikes in the area.

      Carrying is limited to business of the day and picnic. Luggage is carried by vehicle. Please allow 1 bag per person, maximum 15kg/bag.

      You are advised to start your circuit on Sunday.

      Free departure for those on a self-guided hike and for organised groups.

      By car : Motorway towards Spain  : head in the direction of Hendaye
      By train : Hendaye SNCF train station
      By plane : Biarritz Airport then shuttle bus to Hendaye SNCF train station

      5 nights in a hotel (double bedroom) on a half-board basis, except in St-Jean-Pied-de-Port where you will stay on a B&B basis.

      You go on your own, as a couple, with family or friends. We take care of your accommodation, meals, luggage transfer and group.

      You have good hiking experience and can find your way with a map and compass. From one stage to the next, you'll follow our My LaRébenne app on your phone, where you'll find your complete file with maps, tracks, accommodation and transporters, as well as all the information you need for your stay. If you don't want the digital folder, but prefer the paper version with the classic navigation tools such as maps, map holder, topo-guide and printed information, please let us know.

      Freedom means hiking lightly, at your own pace, and enjoying the pleasures of nature to the full, without worrying about the logistics of your stay. It also means being free to interpret and imagine what the Pyrenees have to say.

      Your trip might not be the best time to diet, as it's an occasion to taste the local cooking. We place great importance to the quality of the food we provide : well-balanced and nutritious, providing lots of energy with the specialties of the region incorporated into each meal.

      DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 2.5/5

      This hike is aimed at adults who are in good physical condition and can hike between 4 and 7 hours per day (please contact us regarding younger hikers). The itinerary doesn’t present any technical difficulties. You must know how to read a map. You should be an experienced mountaineer. On Day 5, certain paths could present difficulties for those suffering from vertigo, but there is the option to avoid them.
